It is very important to keep in mind that a client has a precise vision how the product has to be presented. This is why the client has to supply the props. As a photographer I shoot thousands products in all types of different categories.
That means I can't have all kinds of props that match every type of product.
In general we have two types of commercial product photography: product photography for online/printed catalogues (white background) and advertising photography (artistic set ups - group shots with props, using models, etc.). To see some examples for both check this link
I do advertising photography on location for corporations (product stylist assistance required) and tabletop product photography in my studio.
